This got me super excited to make some dirt, water and green shades of tye dye items with an earthy incline tie dye method of ice dying. Trying to symbolize the plants natural way of growth with a green thumb style vibe.

Skirt is sold - can do customs!

Hope you dig the results, check my

Top Tip Or Advice - Tie Dye Tips

"March Meet The Maker" challenge

Day 23
top tip or advice

Template mAdNeSs!

Love using design templates, especially if I need to do multiples of the same shape design. This way I get them the same size on the items yet everything still turns out one of a kind because that's just how tie dying works.

Fold the front of the tee in half

We've found that turning items such as t-shirts, tops, and pants inside out before tying them up seems to give us better results, not sure why but it does. To start doing shape designs fold the front of an item like a tee in half and draw or trace out a symmetrical design of your choice to try to tie up. Use your imagination and just go for it! ✍️

Position the template where you want it and start tracing.

Templates can be made with a piece of paper or cardboard, we like to use flooring template material for it's sturdy but flexible and easy to store away when not using.

Ta-da!

The collection posted above includes most of the requested tie dye custom orders we've done in the past or tried to do anyway! Do you see a template design we custom made for YOU in this bunch? 👀

Proud of...

"March Meet The Maker" challenge

Day 22
proud of

Bear-dala Design

At first our tie dye creations truly were, whats the nice word for it...oh, awful and we thought we would never be as good as other tie dyers.

After months and months of practicing tying & dyeing designs and shapes up our skills improved big time! Eventually we thought our stuff was the shit,

even if in reality it was meh, "so so" lol. 🖐🎨✨🌈

Thankful to have went through those ups and downs back then, the confidence we gained made dreams happen! I'm really proud we stuck with this craft and kept trying to do things we never thought possible while staying positive along the way! ✌️

Throwback - Tie Dye Tapestry

"March Meet The Maker" challenge

Day 21
throwback!

Rainbow Moon Galaxy

Crafted up this colorful space inspired tie dye tapestry back in 2012!
The fabric we used was so thick, I think this was actually a large dishtowel.
We're going to have to bring this design back, lots of work
but definitely one of a kind & stellar AF! 🌈🚀

Tie Dye Design Process

"March Meet The Maker" challenge

Day 20
design process

NEW "eye" love the moon design

Most designs we do we've done a zillion times before so we
just fold up the fabric and get tying.

The wild tie dye designs take a little more time and effort starting with

the initial idea sketched out on paper. (My desk is FULL of these) Then the design is drawn out on the fabric with a washable marker. Usually have to tweak it a bit so a darker color marker is used on the final design so we know which lines to tie up.
Finally it's time to tie it! 🖐

drawn out & ready to tie

This "Eye Love the Moon" design hasn't been dyed yet
so it may or may not turn out rad...we'll see 👀💖🌜

Happy Spring Equinox 🌱 Ostara

Dream Collaboration

"March Meet The Maker" challenge

Day 19
dream collaboration
Honestly, we've never given much thought about who we'd like to do a dream collaboration with before. Off the top off my head I'd say a band to do stage backdrops for but that's pretty much a given for most dyers, right?! 🎤
.
The more I give it some thought I'd dig for Moon Dyes to vibe up with an indi home seamstress who would use our hand dyed fabrics to sew goods or we could dye up blanks they have sewn already. ✂️
.
If we must DREAM though, we'd love love love love love for our small business to work with companies such as @Gypsyrosedotcom and @SoulFlowerbuds to hand dye clothing for them to sell to you beautiful souls out there! 💖🖐🎨✨🌈

Mistake Or Lesson

"March Meet The Maker" challenge

Day 18
mistake or lesson

Bolts of fabric for a HUGE custom order
Bolts of fabric for a HUGE custom order

Well this one just happened to us this month so it's a fresh lesson learnt
that may help other tie dyers who decide to give dyeing up a
28-foot long tapestry a shot. 🎨

Our custom order was for two 28' x 5' wide tapestry panels.

Honestly we have never dyed that long of a piece of fabric before but we
have the space and wanted to give larger things a try so we we're excited to get
this custom. Cut both panels at 30' long to account for 2 feet of fabric shrinkage
but it shrunk a lil' over 3 feet lengthwise just during the pre-wash. 😲

When cutting the length, CUT MORE!

Totally unexpected and what a bummer to be making this kind of mistake
on such a large custom order. In the end it ended up shrinking a wee bit more
after washing out the dye but the lesson here fellow tie dyers is to cut at
least 4-5 feet more fabric then needed when doing super long customs.

Finished products!

 Trust us cut.more.fabric ✂️ you're welcome!

Day 15
motivation/goals

www.moondyes.com

Our kids!
Wanting to be able to pay the rent & bills yet have an open schedule

was the main goal of working at home and still is. These last four years have been super slow for Moon Dyes since we had two children in a row
and I pushed the dyes aside. Slowly getting back into the shop and 100% motivated to start creating more eye catching creations to help our
lil' family business gain more exposure. 💕

How I Learnt - Tie Dyeing

"March Meet The Maker" challenge

Day 14
how I learnt

https://amzn.to/2UA4DBW

Everything happened one year after I got a small tie dye kit. 🎨 Can't remember if it was for Christmas or my Birthday nor how old I was but I do remember having such a BLAST and loving the results no matter how fugly they turned out!

https://amzn.to/2VYHTvJ

So of course I had to move on to the larger tie dye kit because I just needed to try those designs on the front of the box. N.e.e.d.e.d to lol. 😜 After I mastered those easy designs I started searching the web (took forever to get online with A.O.L remember) and was totally obsessed with the tie dye creations I was seeing online from Wildflower Dyes, Steve Anderson and others at the time not knowing who they actually were. I printed them out and tried to fold the paper up to figure out how they did that. Mindblown.

Once I met Jason I included him in on my colorful obsession, we then ordered the "Learn How To Tie Dye" DVD set to really kick our designs up a notch and it did. I opened an Etsy shop to start selling all our dope goods but never really started adding items until almost a year later, scared to take the plunge. We both joined Facebook in 2009 and Jason found the Addicted to Tie Dyeing group which had all the tie dyers I had looked up to in it, I could finally put a face to the ooak creations I had drooled over all those years! Such an epic way to learn more about tie dyeing and how other artist do things.

All kinds of unique dyers were posting tips and tutorials along with the groovy dyes they were crafting up like Tie Dye Ron's tutorials that helped us with tying and dyeing the mandala design. We were officially hooked on shapes and that's when the real magic started happening thanks to high quality Dharma Trading Co. dyes, material & blanks especially the artificial sinew! Those tightly pulled white lines make me smile and I love how well it separates colors of dye while making details POP! 👀

Since then we've been experimenting with more shapes, designs, colors, methods and different types of fabrics & still look forward to learning many more techniques while meeting other dyers throughout our career.

Photography - Photographing Products

"March Meet The Maker" challenge

Day 13
photography

Definitely need help with photography. 📷

When its nice outside we hang tie dye tapestries on the side of the house
or just hold them up and we lay clothing on the deck to get pics
but the long winter months I struggle with photographing items inside,
usually shooting them on a table with a backdrop an a tripod.
.
Looking for models this year so hopefully that'll help bring our wearable creations to life.
✌️ Drop me a line if interested!

We're looking for people in the FM area for monthly photo shoots and anyone anywhere online who will wear our goods, post quality photos and tag us on their Instagram and Facebook pages. Serious inquiries only.

🖐️💥🎨
This is one item from yesterdays dye batch being untied with a sneak peek reveal at the end. A trippy trial for a custom order we're in the middle of doing! Trying to figure out the best way for dye placement so we dyed a few trials because well,
customs make me nervous...

Reducing Waste - Tie Dye Shop Tips

"March Meet The Maker" challenge

Day 11
reducing waste

As a tie dye artist we accumulate a lot of plastic containers after we use up our dyes. Using them to mix OOAK colors and dye small details & designs with droppers or syringes is one way we help reduce waste. Muck dyeing small items in the larger containers is a tidy way to get tons of stuff dyed as well. Storing things we use for tie dyeing such as rubber bands, washable markers, sinew rolls, scissors, and wood shapes for clap dyeing in the larger containers is convenient since they have lids.

so. many. containers.

Love those crisp white lines on tie dyes? Well, a ton of artificial sinew is gone through to do some of those rad designs like mandalas, lotus blossoms and especially geodes. The stuff is tough and can take a beating so I like to save the used sinew, unravel it and tie it together with a knot so I can re-roll it onto a spool to use again an again and sometimes even again! I'm in the middle of a short lil' blog post on how to do this right now.

arrrrgh a tangled mess - I like to de-stress by untangling it

ready to respool

Last but not least is - drum roll - scrap fabric!!!
Maybe you remember how much messed up tie dyes I claim to have in my Day 7 post so of course I've been trying to repurposed them into upcycled items. Fabric cloth scrubbies is one of my faves to make an a simple way to use up cool looking scraps. Other then that I pretty much want to do everything in the Generation T books with my junk tie dye t-shirts but haven't had much time yet.

Story Behind Moon Dyes Name

"March Meet The Maker" challenge

Day 9
story behind name

Super "pregnant" Moon 2015

I've always been drawn to the Moon. It's vibes bring me patience and energy to create projects in the still of the night. Unless a baby is crying of course.

When the business was first starting out it was named The Four20moon Shop. I thought that was a clever AF way to attract the tie dye buyers, and it was but it was just too long and gave off the obvious "stoner vibes" which got old fast. So cliche, tie dyes and 420. Looking to start vending in town I then decided to shorten the business name to make it simple and more family friendly so we wouldn't be judged or stereotyped from the get-go but I really wanted to keep the Moon in it somehow.

After some brainstorming, Moon Dyes was the best fit.

So inspired by the way the Moon makes me feel. I envision it helping with my craft an always trying to make a habit of running the business as well as life by the Moon cycles. 💕 Awwwwwwe, what a Selenophile!

Less Glam Side - Tie Dye Artist Life

"March Meet The Maker" challenge

Day 7
less glam side

Oh boy...
 deep down belly chuckles

Major FAIL moments happen every. damn. day.
Trying to laugh them all off is the joke that writes itself. Sure, at the
time things go wrong I get flustered AF 🔥 but if I snap a pic of the mess
I'll eventually look back and find it all very amusing. A twisted
learning method I'm sure most people do.

Red crotch mess up on jumpsuit lol
First of all, my pile of messed up tie dyes is ridiculous to the max.
Seriously. We are our own worst critics and most stuff that I think is fugly is probably dope as heck to someone out there but yet it sits in my junk to-be-recycled closet, numerous totes and boxes. Most things are "those kind of mess ups" such as the dreaded red crotch monsters, designs not centered or saturated all the way through, sinew lines disappearing 💥 and holes or flaws in the products.
The pile of blanks to dye in the closet is also embarrassing.
So much white man, I really need to get dyeing.

Banner & my wee one BEFORE the "accident"

My most recent flub involved fray check an a moon phase banner I was serging the edges of. Lets just say the stuff was not working so I pushed the tip onto the fabric & squeezed too hard then BAMN! plop plop plop goes the fray check. Some big plops hit the banner in a few spots while a medium size one hit me right in the eye covering my eyelashes with a sticky, mucky mess. Yea, fun.

My eye eventually recovered but my banner didn't.

AFTER
this happened in a few places whoopsy

Don't squeeze the fray check wrong = CHECK!

Fabric can be frightening! I truly love working with it but it's also a pain. Ironing and lint rolling isn't the most glam task yet it must be done. Just turn up some jams, gap out and work work work! What time is it...3 AM?! uh oh.

The last TWO bolts of cotton fabric we purchased had flaws in the whole thing. Major and multiple defected lines that showed up after dyeing them, making every single tapestry from it pretty much damaged from the start. I failed to see these flaws before I ripped both the bolts up into tapestry blanks and serged the edges with cotton thread on half.
#@%!

Maybe I should list them super cheap?
 Still wtf man...
