Took forever to tie up but the untying was a snap since I used one looong string of sinew an as you can see from the final outcome...it looks so GrOoVy!

Festival Inspired Sunburst Tye Dyes - Cockers Woodstock Tie Dye Tee

A million times I'm asked to make a replica tie dye design from a super groovy hippie festival back in 1969 worn by Joe at least every other week. 

All an all it's a very simple and mega retro tye dye sunburst or sunflower design but the fact that I have to make something look like the work of another tiedyer when I do take on these customs is a big pain in the arse lol. Doing them on long sleeve henley tees is a major reason why its tricky but I do love a challenge, sometimes...

Tie Dye Ice Cream Tees

Did a fun custom tie dye order for two toddler tees and a v-neck ladies style t-shirt which turned out super cute & yummy! 

When doing customs I usually do two of each item to make sure one of them works out. A valuable lesson learned from many years of failed custom orders lol. This way I can always list the extras in my Etsy shop.

Find the center & draw out the design

Sometimes I mess up on the centering lol

Its tricky to position shape designs on a v-neck tee

 Important steps in hand tying shape designs on a tee shirt is first, always make sure you center the design in the middle of the tee and get in at the right height as well. 

You  may need to try it on or hold it up to your body to make sure it looks right. Too far up or too far down and it will look a wee bit funny.

Be Creative!

Think of placing the shape in an unusual way like on the bottom sideways or on the back of the top. Go crazy.

Hand tied with sinew and tiny rubber bands

 After you've decided where the shape will go fold the FRONT only of the t-shirt in half where the design was drawn. If your a good artist you can fold the tee then draw out half of the ice cream design.

 FOLDING & TYING:

Start at the cherry on top, tie it up pleating on the line and tie it with sinew or tiny hair rubber bands. 

  Then tie the ice cream part. 

I use one long string of artificial sinew for Moon Dyes shape designs. Love the white line it produces and I have less worrying about bleeding of my colors. Rubber bands can be used tight on each part as well. I crinkle the ice cream area so I can dye it a light color and then a darker on top for a psychedelic look.

Then you tie up the cone area in a pleat fashion. To keep it together I wrap the tiny hair bands on it. Dye light brown with a little dark brown on top to give it a waffle cone look!

Stripes were tied around the tie dye ice cream cone design all through out the tee to finish the tying part up.

 DYING:

Procion fiber reactive dyes are hand mixed fresh for all projects. 

Rainbow colors of awesomeness!

Droppers are used for each color to apply dye in small tricky areas of the shape designs. It takes patience and a steady hand!

Tie dye artist secret, shhhhh!

 

 After I've hand dropped the ice cream shape part I use the bottles of dye to dye up the rest of the tee. Then I store it in a plastic tote with a lid for 12-24 hours in a warm are to let the dye bond with the fabric to make it colorfast. You can also use a plastic grocery bag if you have no totes.

WASH OUT DAY:

Rinse out excess dye in COLD water until water runs fairly clear. Untie or unwrap your item and rinse in cold again. Then throw it in a hot wash cycle with a squirt of blue dawn dish liquid or synthrapol detergent. Wash 2-3 times more depending on how dark of colors you've dyed with and how big of a load done. 

Tumble dry low and wear!

To keep dyes bright & vibrant wash in COLD water with like colors.

My name is Lila Moon & I'm a Moon-aholic 🌙 

Selenophile (n.) a person who loves the moon. 

It's true, the soothing Moon vibes I feel in the darkness recharge me and make me feel at peace. Hence my new* business name "Moon Dyes".  I imagine the light 
of the moon radiating onto each piece of fabric I dye, helping the fibers bond 
with the pigment while I dye it. It's silly but encourages my artistic growth.

Custom Kids Smiley Face Tees

Custom tie dye orders tend to make my day and this one for 10 toddlers in Texas will always bring a big smile to my face! Notice how each Smiley is the same...but different. I tried to give each "SMILE" tee it's own one of a kind personality. 

OOAK "Hand Tied" Tie Dyes

 Hand tied each tee after folding them in half and drew half of a smiley face on it with a waterproof marker. To tie a tiedye you can use rubber bands of all sizes and widths or sinew. I use a variety of both depending on what kind of shape design I'm tying up. For the face using rubber bands will work fine but to get some dope white lines go with the sinew. 

 

Bold & brightly dyed Tie Dyes!

 Bottle dyed with high quality, non toxic, fiber reactive & colorfast procion dyes from Dharma Trading. Its tricky to keep the face yellow and dye the eyes and mouth black but sometimes when the dye bleeds some pretty far out results can happen. This can become stressful when doing customs for you don't want to majorly mess them up. Droppers, dry fabric and tons of patience works wonders.

Always wash your items in COLD water with like colors to keep your dyes bright. This applies to any of your tie dyes, even ones not purchased from Moon Dyes :)

An ice cream cone tie dye design was hand tied on this Adult Small (34-36 in) Lightweight & tagless cotton Hanes undershirt.

The ice cream is dyed light purple and grape with a red cherry on top! A light & dark brown cone holds the delicious scoop. Stripes of baby pink, black, lavender, light purple and grape surround the cone on the front while the rest of the tshirt was crunkled in a blotter design and dyed various shades of purple with black on the top to make it stand out.

Halloween is Near!

I don't know about you but I LOVE Halloween & all the groovy tie dye designs that spring from my fingers.

Been tying up a few skulls here & there & wanted to share this truly spook-tastic custom colored order I just finished for a groovy FB bud. I used a new shade of orange this time around (deep orange) and I am very pleased.

Eco-Friendly Laundry Daze

So pure, so natural...why the hell are we not all using this?!? 

Sad to say, but it took me many years to jump on this simple idea. Recently made a medium sized batch with my man & so far I'm honestly impressed :) No smelly goodness in our first Eco-Friendly batch but I'm super eager to try out scents!

Fashionable Solutions For Special Needs

Just finished up a fun little sock order for Ross Daniels Adaptive Apparel. We do the tie dying for a couple of the sock designs sold for disabled children and teens who wear ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs).

Tie Dye Monkeys & Turtles? Oh my!

I got a fun custom order from a groovy FB bud for some tees & tanks for him & his daughter a few weeks back. I just finished them up and sent them off to enjoy there new home. These were the first tank tops made for the season. Hurray! And bonus: They turned out perfect.

Pauls order drying out naturally

The way I tie dye is I soak them in soda ash mixture for 20-30- mins then I squeeze them out and wring them out in a washer quick then I tie up the goods using my crafty hands & let them naturally air dry by a window on some racks I rigged up. They sit out to get bone dry before I start dying. This way I get a nice sharp pattern of the design I want.

Patience = AWESOME dyes!

Once they are dyed I let them bond overnight. Then the next day is rinse & wash day! It does take a while to get a custom tie dye made but it is worth the wait. Just ask my kynd customers opinions.
